The hedgehog is part of the Erinaceidae family. It is a unique creature as it is the only British mammal to have a spine. The most common hedgehog is the European hedgehog. The European hedgehog of course lives throughout Europe but also in parts of Asia. The European hedgehog is a least concerned animal and is in no threat of extinction as it is fully protected in the Biodiversity Action Plan.
Here are some subspecies of the hedgehog:
European,
4 toed,
Czech,
Long-eared hedgehog,
and there are 14 others. And Sonic the Hedgehog is not one of the subspecies.
The hedgehog life span depends on size a larger hedgehog could live up to 7 years in the wild in captivity it can live up to 10 years, smaller hedgehogs can live up to 4 years and in captivity they can live up to 7 years.
The average length for a male European hedgehog is 25cm; weight is 600g after hibernation and before hibernation about double. Females are slightly less than males in weight and length.
Even though the hedgehog is fully protected it has a few protection skills of its own like whenever in any danger it will curl into tight ball like shape and as it is covered in a prickly material it is safe it can curl into a ball because it has a spine. Unfortunately this ball like defense is useless against a motor vehicles, this is how we have impacted on their lives. Road kill.
Hedgehogs will eat anything they can get their hands on the main foods they will eat are:
Worms,
Slugs,
Frogs,
and even bird eggs. These foods would be found after a few kilometers walked this happens at night. The hedgehog doesn't really have a main predator but hedgehog bone have been found in owls nest.
The perfect habitat for a hedgehog is near to a pond but quite a lot of the time a hedgehog is used as a domestic pet so if you have a hedgehog as a pet the best thing for it is an area where it can move so spacious.
